SUBSTANCE: claimed invention relates to the field of monitoring bone characteristics for conditions such as osteoporosis and/or periodontitis. The system for monitoring bone characteristics contains: a device for dental hygiene containing a handle designed to be held by a user; device attached to a handle and operable by a user to perform a dental hygiene task; infrared emitter mounted on the dental hygiene appliance to emit infrared radiation towards the user's lower jaw; an infrared sensor mounted on the dental hygiene appliance to detect the infrared response that has been affected by the absorption of infrared radiation by the lower jaw; and a controller connected with the capability to communicate with the infrared illuminator and infrared sensor. The controller is designed to: control the infrared emitter for emitting infrared radiation in the direction of the lower jaw for a predetermined amount of time; receive from the infrared sensor one or more signals indicating the detected response infrared radiation; and determining one or more characteristics of the user's bones using spectral analysis of the response infrared radiation.

EFFECT: claimed invention helps determine bone characteristics and prevent bone problems.
