FIELD: electrical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the area of electrical engineering and power engineering and can be used to determine the point of damage to overhead power lines in 6 to 750 kV electric power networks. Substance: the point of damage is calculated considering the times of arrival of the electromagnetic wavefront to the branch units of the overhead power line determined according to the results of processing the current and voltage measurement data from the connection circuits of the branch equipment recorded with increased time resolution and global synchronisation within the period of time between the times of arrival of the electromagnetic wavefront to opposite ends of the overhead power line. The apparatus comprises additional subsets located on the branch units of the overhead power line connected via communication ports by a communication channel with the point of calculation of the point of damage to the overhead power line. The input of the unit for electrical value measurement in each subset at the branch unit is connected to measuring current and (or) voltage converters installed in the branch equipment circuits
EFFECT: technical result is possibility to determine the point of damage more accurately, as well as increased accuracy of determining the point of damage and expanded area of application.
