FIELD: vehicle passenger protection systems.
SUBSTANCE: when the secondary function of the vehicle passenger protection system is activated, the current spatial position of the vehicle is determined. The vehicle lifting off the ground and the vehicle hitting the ground with the wheels is detected. The first time interval (ZF1) between the detected lift-off and impact on the ground by the wheels are determined and the secondary function is activated if, during the first time interval (ZF1), the vertical acceleration (az) or a value derived from it fulfills the third criterion (K3), representing the impact of the vehicle on the ground by the roof, and/or the lateral acceleration (ay) or a value derived from it fulfills the fourth criterion (K4) representing the side impact of the vehicle on the ground, or if the first time interval (ZF1) exceeds a given time (ZD), and the detected impact vehicle on the ground with its wheels fulfills the specified fifth criterion (K5), which is a hard impact on the ground followed by the onset of a state of rest. A device for implementing the method and a computer-readable medium are also proposed.
EFFECT: reliable and confident detection of fast-occurring rollovers with a 360-degree overturn is achieved.
