FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing hydrocarbons from a fatty acid source, comprising (a) heating a fatty acid source to obtain a first composition comprising hydrocarbons and at least one free short chain fatty acid; and (b) separating at least one free short chain fatty acid from the first composition by means of an adsorption or ion exchange process. Short chain fatty acids can be continuously separated and fed to the pyrolysis reactor, which in turn improves the overall efficiency of hydrocarbon production. Alternatively, short-chain fatty acids can be isolated and used in other applications.

EFFECT: methods described herein provide an efficient method for removing and recovering short chain fatty acids from hydrocarbons that are formed by heating a fatty acid source.
