FIELD: computer technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to providing a guide to the user and, more specifically, to displaying a guide pointer to the user if specific conditions are met. The claimed result of the invention is achieved by a method of displaying a guide pointer to the user, containing the steps at which: a sequence of images of the user's head is taken; from each image of the sequence of images, information is determined related to the position of the user's head; and a guide pointer is displayed to the user on the display screen associated with the representation of the user's head, only if one or more certain conditions regarding the position of the head are met, so that the user is given an indication that it is positioned appropriately for the position of the head to be determined; in this case, certain conditions concerning the position of the head contain one or more of the following: i) information related to head position indicates that the change in head position over a certain period is less than a certain threshold value; and ii) information related to the head position indicates that the orientation of the head relative to the display screen is in a certain angular range.

EFFECT: capability to display a guide pointer to the user that can be selectively displayed and removed from view as appropriate.
