SUBSTANCE: invention relates to agriculture. A method for producing a herbicide 2-ethylhexyl ester of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid by esterification of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) with 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH), and the source of 2-EH is a by-product of production - a heavy product of rectification 2-thylhexanol (HPR), from which by double fractional distillation under reduced pressure an alcohol fraction is isolated with a 2-EH content of 83-90% and the esterification of 2,4-D with the isolated alcohol fraction is carried out at a reaction mixture temperature of 123-230°С and a molar ratio of 2,4-D and 2-EH equal to 1 : 1.2-1.5, respectively.

EFFECT: invention allows expanding raw material sources for the production of 2,4-D 2-ethylhexyl ester, efficiently disposing industrial waste.
