FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of protection of underground metal structures from corrosion caused by geomagnetic-induced sources of stray currents, and can be used in the operation of underground pipelines affected by geomagnetic-induced stray currents. Essence: protective devices containing current-carrying elements and control units are placed on the pipeline, current-carrying elements to the pipeline through normally open relays are connected. Data on geomagnetic disturbances are obtained from geomagnetic observatories. When the threshold value of the parameter characterizing the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances is reached, the current-carrying elements are centrally connected to the pipeline. If the parameter is reduced below the threshold level, the current-carrying elements are centrally disconnected from the pipeline. Protective earths or protectors are used as current-carrying elements.
EFFECT: reduced cost and simplified implementation of a system for protecting pipeline sections from geomagnetic-induced stray currents.
