FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used when choosing the time for scheduled outage of cathodic protection stations of pipelines and underground metal structures for different purposes. The method of reducing the rate of metal corrosion of a steel pipeline involves forecasting the intensity of corpuscular eruptions from the earth radiation belt associated with geomagnetic storminess based on observations of the current solar activity. The method also involves analysis of the type, form and intensity of the imminent geomagnetic disturbance - a global magnetic storm, to obtain a forecast of the start time and duration of its phases: main, recovery and periods of post-storm (recurrent) disturbances of corpuscular eruptions. Periods for scheduled outage of cathodic protection stations are chosen based on the forecast. Prolonged outage is carried out during the main phase and recovery phase of the global magnetic storm, as well as the next post-storm phase of recurrent increase in intensity of corpuscular eruptions from the earth radiation belt.
EFFECT: preserving electrochemical protection during periods of anomalously strong effect of telluric currents during their sporadic rise in perturbed geophysical periods.
