SUBSTANCE: claimed is an apparatus for converting a wheelchair with a manual drive into a wheelchair with an electric drive. The apparatus for converting a wheelchair with a manual drive into a wheelchair with an electric drive is comprised of a control stick functionally connected with a communication unit, wherein the communication unit is functionally connected with the engine; and said engine has an axis connected with a rotor; a retractable friction roller installed on the axis, wherein said roller is in contact with a wheel of the manual wheelchair, wherein the friction roller has a body with a centreless concave rim configured to provide a surface with a high friction coefficient facing the wheel of the wheelchair with a manual drive; a contacting unit attached to the wheelchair to provide a detachable connection of the retractable friction roller with the wheel, and a power supply functionally connected with the engine and the control stick. The group of inventions also relates to a method for converting a manual wheelchair into a wheelchair with an electric drive.

EFFECT: group of inventions is aimed at creating an apparatus for converting a wheelchair with a manual drive into a system with a mechanised drive, which is economical, convenient for transportation, easy to install and use, relatively light, alternately convertible from a wheelchair with an electric drive to a wheelchair with manual drive without detaching the apparatus, as well as configured to be adapted to existing wheelchairs with a manual drive without the need to be installed by a qualified specialist.
