SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine, namely to ophthalmology, endocrinology, therapy, nephrology, and can be used for the diagnosis of diabetic macular edema. Laboratory studies of the glomerular filtration rate are carried out. Diabetic macular edema is diagnosed in patients suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus for 10 years or more, with a glomerular filtration rate determined by the Cockroft-Gault formula below 59 ml/min/1.73 m2. The method comes to determining the glomerular filtration rate in a standard examination of patients, which allows determining the tactics of an interdisciplinary approach to early diagnosis of the disease, immediate referral to an ophthalmologist to choose further tactics for treating retinal lesions in the early stages.

EFFECT: method provides the possibility of diagnosing retinal lesions with the development of macular edema in patients suffering from type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus with a disease duration of 10 years or more in the primary polyclinic.
