The aerosol providing system for producing an aerosol inhaled by the user comprises an aerosol-producing article containing an aerosol-forming material in the form of a solid substance or a gel, wherein the aerosol-producing article comprises a substrate, and the aerosol-forming material is adjacent to the substrate made of paper and/or cardboard and/or metal foil, and a control unit with a socket for receiving the aerosol-producing article, configured to produce an aerosol from the aerosol-forming material during use. The aerosol-producing article therein includes a data storage unit configured to store an identifier identifying the aerosol-producing article, and the control unit is configured to receive an identifier from the data storage unit and prompt an action based on the received identifier.
