SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine, namely, to oncology, and can be used to estimate the expression of folate receptor alpha (FRα) by a malignant tumour constituting ovarian cancer or lung cancer. The method includes determining the level of folate receptor alpha (FRα), not associated with the cell, in a sample of serum or plasma obtained from said individual, and comparing the level of folate receptor alpha (FRα), not associated with the cell, with the level of FRα in a reference sample, wherein the increase in the level of FRα in the sample obtained from said individual relative to the level of FRα in the reference sample indicates that the individual is suffering from ovarian or lung cancer expressing FRα. The level of FRα, not associated with the cell, in a sample of serum or plasma obtained from said individual, is estimated by bringing the sample of serum or plasma in contact with a pair of FRα-binding antibodies, in a sandwich assay with two antibodies, wherein said sandwich assay with two antibodies constitutes electrochemiluminescent immunoassay (ECLIA) or enzyme immunoassay (EIA).

EFFECT: use of the invention allows for an accurate estimation of FRα levels in serum and plasma.
