SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to an apparatus for producing aerosol from an aerosol-forming substance, containing an article made of an aerosol-forming substance, and to a method for controlling the aerosol-producing apparatus. The apparatus comprises a body, a chamber for accommodating the article containing an aerosol-forming substance and a marking structure including a first marker and a second marker, located at a predetermined distance from each other, and a structure with sensors, containing a first sensor for determining the first marker and a second sensor for determining the second marker. The first and the second sensors are located at approximately the same distance from each other as said predetermined distance, wherein the first sensor has a first sensitivity area wherein it is capable of detecting the first marker, and the second sensor has a second sensitivity area wherein it is capable of detecting the second marker. The first and the second sensors are therein located at such a distance from each other that a point in the first sensitivity area and a point in the second sensitivity area are spaced by a predetermined distance. The method includes determining a first indicating sign of the product by means of the first sensor from the structure with sensors, a second indicating sign of the product by means of the second sensor from the structure with sensors, located at a predetermined distance from the first sensor, determining the distance between the first indicating sign and the second indicating sign, and controlling the aerosol-producing apparatus based on at least the distance between the first indicating sign and the second indicating sign.
