SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a system for monitoring the contact forces between the rail and the wheel of a railway vehicle. The system for determining the value of friction between the rail and the wheel of a railway vehicle including at least one axle coupled with two wheels with a radius (R), comprises a deformation detection scheme (10), coupled with the axle (1), configured to detect the torsional deformation of the axle, caused by the longitudinal friction force (Flong) transmitted from the axle to the rail; a control tool configured to estimate the value of torque depending on the identified torsional deformation and convert the calculated value of torque to the value of longitudinal friction force (Flong) depending on the radius (R) of wheels, and calculate the value of friction between the wheel and the rail using the ratio between said value of longitudinal friction force (Flong) and the value of normal load exerted by the axle on the rail. Also described is a method for determining the value of friction between the rail and the wheel of a railway vehicle.
EFFECT: possibility of estimating the longitudinal forces transmitted from the axle to the rail based on the torsional deformation of the axle occurs as a result.
