FIELD: computing technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and apparatus for translating an original phrase from a first language into a second language. The method is implemented by a computer apparatus with access to a catalogue containing a set of source sentences in a first language and a set of target sentences in a second language, wherein each target sentence contained in the set of target sentences corresponds to a translation of the original sentence from the set of source sentences and includes retrieval of a source phrase in the first language; formation of a translation of one or more target phrases in the second language with different semantic meanings in the second language by the algorithm; for each resulting target phrase in the second language, retrieving the corresponding target sentence in the second language, containing one of the target phrases, from the catalogue; and selecting a source phrase in the first language corresponding to one or multiple target phrases in the second language and target sentences corresponding thereto, retrieved from the catalogue, for display.

EFFECT: increase in the efficiency of translation of the text.
