SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of switching between different types of video content displayed online on a web page. Disclosed is a method and an electronic device for switching playback between a first video content and a second video content on a web page of a browser application of the electronic device. Method includes: obtaining a digital document representing a web page containing a video tag indicating a first source; establishing a first connection between a first video player and a video tag; first video player playing back first video content from first source; in response to the triggering event, pausing playback of the first video content, establishing a second connection between the second video player and the video tag and playing back the second video content by the second video player; in response to completion of reproduction of the second video content, repeated establishment of the first connection and resumption of reproduction of the first video content by the first video player.

EFFECT: improved perception by end users when viewing online video materials containing, for example, commercial inserts.
