FIELD: measuring.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of meteorology and can be used to determine the presence of atmospheric objects with a specific orientation of the crystalline particles. Substance: linearly polarised laser pulse radiation is sent into the atmosphere. The signals scattered by the atmosphere are received back in two mutually orthogonal polarisation planes, wherein one matches the polarisation plane of sounding laser emission. The ratio of the amplitudes of the received signals, determining the value of the depolarisation degree of a lidar signal with linear polarisation, is calculated. The linearly polarised laser emission is converted into circular polarisation emission and sent into the atmosphere. The signals scattered by the atmosphere are received back. The depolarisation degree of the lidar signal with circular polarisation is calculated. The ratio of the depolarisation degree values on sounding with circular and linear polarisation is then calculated. When said ratio falls below two, the presence of atmospheric objects with a specific orientation of the crystalline particles is determined.
EFFECT: detection of areas with a specific or chaotic orientation of crystalline ice particles in clouds.
