SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of maintenance and monitoring of the railway track. Method for determining the location of points or lines (A, B, C, D) of interest on a railway track (22) by means of a railway track positioning system (12) comprising a linear camera (26) and an odometer (28) moving along the railway track (22 ) in the advancing direction (100), the odometer (28) repeatedly collects instantaneous position data of the line camera (26) relative to the railway track (22) in the advancing direction (100), and the line camera (26) directed at the railway track (22) repeatedly collects instantaneous linear optical data along the line (50) of the instantaneous measurement. Then, by processing at least instantaneous linear optical data and instantaneous positioning data, a bitmap image of the area of the surface of the railway track (22) is built, and at least one spatial indexing marker (56) of a predetermined characteristic and its position relative to the support rail are identified on this bitmap image.
