SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of providing information-measuring systems used in railway machines with a contactless reading device for determining the position of sleepers. In the method for determining the position of the centres of railroad sleepers, a sliding window of size N=2n is used to record the moments of passage of the beginning and end of the sleeper, where n is a natural number. At that, at each moment of time i covered with window range readings sample di is divided into two sub-samples d1i and d2i of equal length n, for each subsample, mean-square deviations of range measurements are estimated σ1i and σ2i and calculating two indicators Ind_1i=σ1i/σ2i and Ind_2i=σ2i/σ1i. Further, the time coordinates of the points of local extrema iextr_1 and iextr_2 of the indicators Ind_1i and Ind_2i, which have exceeded the detection threshold of Zthr, are estimated, and the time of passage of the centre of the sleeper is determined using the formula tsc=0.5(iextr_1 + iextr_2 – N). Track coordinates of the sleeper centre are estimated from the information from the distance measuring device when recording the track travelled by the machine s(t).
EFFECT: higher probability of correct detection of sleeper centres irrespective of unknown average height of crushed stone on railway track.
