SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a paper sheet detection device, a paper sheet detection method, and a paper sheet processing device. The paper sheet detection device contains: an optical sensor, including a light-emitting section that emits light, and a light-receiving section that receives the emitted light; the section of the storage device that stores the first threshold value used to determine the presence or absence of a paper sheet in the path of the emitted light, the target level of the received light, set as the target value of the light level received by the light receiving section in a state in which the paper sheet is missing, and the second threshold value, which is set to a value that greater than the first threshold value and less than the target level of received light; the evaluation section, which determines whether the level of light received by the light receiving section is equal to or greater than the first threshold value and less than the second threshold value, and which decides on the presence or absence of a paper sheet; and the light intensity control section, which regulates the intensity of the light emitted by the light-emitting section, so that the light level received by the light receiving section becomes the target level of the received light in a state in which there is no paper sheet, when the evaluation section decides that there is no paper sheet, after the evaluation section determines that the light level received by the light receiving area is equal to or greater than the first threshold value and less than the second threshold value.
