SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in the production of materials for abrasive-waterjet processing of the surface of steel products for the protection against corrosion, oxides, paint. Method for manufacturing an abrasive material from liquid blast furnace production slag includes spraying a slag stream into individual particles, cooling the particles in water, drying the particles, screening the abrasive fractions. Blast furnace slag melt of the following composition, wt.%: Fe2O3 and FeO 0.2 to 1, CaO 35 to 45, SiO2 35 to 45, MgO no more than 15, Al2O3 no less than 7, Na2O 0.5 to 1, K2O 1 to 1.5, TiO2 no more than 4, MnO no more than 2, S no more than 1 is used as the source material. The slag melt is broken into individual particles by a jet of a water-air mixture, and said particles are cooled with water to a temperature of no more than 70°C and dehydrated to a moisture content of no more than 10%. Slag particles 0.3 to 5 mm in size are screened as an abrasive material. Also proposed is an abrasive material.

EFFECT: inventions allow production of an abrasive material with a low content of iron oxides and a hardness of 5 to 7 on the Mohs scale from blast furnace slag, reduction of dust formation during use thereof.
