FIELD: water purification.
SUBSTANCE: invention presents systems and methods for reducing the total coal consumption required to generate purified water with low COD. The water purification system contains the first coal stage, an oxidation plant located downstream from the first coal stage and a second coal stage downstream from the oxidation plant. The first coal stage contains the first reservoir containing the first amount of one of powdered activated coal and granular activated coal, effective for reducing the first amount of COD from the wastewater stream and generating the first purified stream having the first reduced amount of COD. The oxidation plant is organized so as to oxidize the second amount of COD from the first purified stream and generate a second purified stream having a second reduced amount of COD. The second coal stage contains a second reservoir containing a second amount of one of powdered activated coal and granular activated coal, effective for reducing the third amount of COD from the second purified stream and generating a third purified stream having a third reduced amount of COD in the area of a given concentration limit or below it.
EFFECT: reduction of the total consumption of activated coal required for the generation of purified water with low COD.
