FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for the production of an alpha-hydroxy compound of the formula (I) 
as a reaction product, where R is -H or -CH3; R' is -CH3, -CH2CH3, -CH(CH3)2, -C6H5, -CH2SCH3, -C8H6N, or -C3H3N2; and R" is -H, -CH3, -CH2CH3, -CH(CH3)2, -CH2CH2CH3, -CH2CH2CH2CH3, -CH2CH(CH3)2, or -C(CH3)3. This method includes following stages: a) provision of the first compound of the formula II: 
; b) provision of the second compound of the formula III: 
where R and R' have values as defined above; c) reaction of the first compound with the second compound and R"OH, where R" has values as defined above, in the presence of a catalyst based on Lewis acid. The invention also relates to a method for the production of amino acid, including a stage of amination of an alpha-hydroxy compound of the formula I, obtained using stages a)-c).
EFFECT: obtainment of amino acids and their hydroxy analogues, using methods, which are flexible and suitable for large-scale industrial production.
