FIELD: separator membranes, separators, and batteries.
SUBSTANCE: inventions group relates to new or improved microporous single or multi-layer battery separator membranes, separators, batteries comprising the membranes or separators, methods of making such membranes, separators and/or batteries. A method for producing a polyethylene/polypropylene/polyethylene microporous multilayer separator includes stretching in the longitudinal direction followed by stretching in the transverse direction and a subsequent calendering step as a mean of reducing the the multilayer microporous membrane thickness to reduce the multilayer microporous membrane relative porosity in a controlled manner and/or to increase the tensile strength in the transverse direction.
EFFECT: invention achieves excellent mechanical strength characteristics, reduce surface layer defects and increase productivity.
