FIELD: membrane engineering and technology.

SUBSTANCE: method for manufacturing a heterogeneous ion-exchange bipolar membrane by hot pressing is presented, including applying a layer of ion-exchanger powder paste to a heterogeneous cation-exchange membrane and/or a heterogeneous anion-exchange membrane, air-drying one or both membranes and their subsequent pressing, characterized by using the paste being an ion-exchanger powder on water-based with a mass fraction of dry powder of the ion exchanger 0.25–0.33, before applying a layer of paste, one and/or both membranes are kept in water at room temperature for 20–24 hours, drying is carried out for 12–24 hours, and pressing at a temperature of 120–140°C, at a pressure of 14–15 atm for 5–10 minutes and cooling to a temperature of 40°C without relieving pressure, while the total paste consumption for the manufacture of a heterogeneous ion-exchange bipolar membrane in terms of dry powder is 10–12 g per 1 m2 of the surface of one membrane soaked in water or 5–6 g per 1 m2 for each of the surfaces of two membranes soaked in water.

EFFECT: obtaining a heterogeneous ion-exchange bipolar membrane with a low operating voltage.
