FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ophthalmology, and to an ophthalmic emulsion containing a gelatinized polymeric hydroxypropyl guar and anionic lipids to provide improved protection against drying and moisture retention. The ophthalmic emulsion contains water, oil, a hydrophilic surfactant and a hydrophobic surfactant, a charged phospholipid, a borate, a mucoadhesive galactomannan polymer, and a preservative. The mucoadhesive galactomannan polymer is present in the emulsion in an amount of at least 0.12 w/v% but not more than 0.4 w/v%. The preservative is free from benzalkonium chloride. The emulsion contains oil droplets dispersed in water and the droplet size D90 is less than 700 nm but greater than 10 nm. The emulsion is characterized by a level of hydration protection against drying, which is at least 10% higher than that of the reference emulsion, while the control emulsion has the same composition as the ophthalmic emulsion, except that it contains 0.05 w/v% of the same galactomannan polymer as that used in the ophthalmic emulsion.
EFFECT: reduction of blurred vision during instillation and improvement of hydration protection of the eyes from drying out and hydration of the eye surface.
