SUBSTANCE: methods of screening are provided to identify candidate therapeutic agents for the treatment of a subject suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (options). The methods include culturing the microorganism in a suitable culture medium in the presence of a test compound, or identifying one or more microbial species, or one or more microbial species already identified , where the microorganism is selected from Bacillus megaterium and/or Pseudomonas putida as being present in increased numbers in the intraocular space in subject, and their cultivation in a suitable culture medium in the presence of a test compound; measuring the growth of the microorganism in the culture medium in the presence of the test compound; wherein the test compound inhibits the growth of a microorganism as compared to a control at its maximum test concentration or below its maximum test concentration, or reduces drusenoid lesion on retinal tissues in an animal; reduces drusen-like nodules under the retinal pigment epithelium in the animal's eye; reduces pyroptosis of retinal pigment epithelium cells in the animal's eye; reduces the activation of the complement system and/or inflammation in the eye of the animal, reduces the expression of proteins C5A, CFH, CASPASE1 and NLRP3; reduces secretion of active IL-1β and/or IL-18 retinal pigment epithelial cells in the eye of an animal; or any of the above combinations, such a test compound may be identified as a candidate therapeutic agent for the treatment or prevention of AMD.

EFFECT: inventions provide an extension of the arsenal of candidate therapeutic agents for the treatment or prevention of eye diseases such as AMD.
