SUBSTANCE: invention is related, in particular to devices with a controlled gas discharge plasma and can be used to test heat-shielding materials, as well as in the development of optical systems for monitoring objects moving in the atmosphere at hypersonic speed. In the device for modelling the shock compressed layer, the material sample is placed in the centre of the tray in the recess of its bottom flush with the inner surface of the tray, the size of the material sample in the direction between the electrodes does not exceed 0.2 of the distance between the electrodes, and the gas discharge initiator is located isolated from the material sample.

EFFECT: ability to test any samples of materials used for lining hypersonic objects for various purposes, including conductive materials.
