FIELD: radioactivity measurement.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to a method for remotely assessing the level of activity of a radioactive cloud in the atmosphere. The cloud is irradiated with an electromagnetic signal, an electromagnetic signal reflected from the cloud is received, and the cloud is irradiated with an electromagnetic signal of circular polarization with a signal wavelength equal to twice the length of the alpha radiation track in the atmosphere. Then the linear polarization of the signal reflected from the cloud is received and the effective scattering area of the irradiated area of the radioactive cloud is measured, according to the formula: Q = σ/(1.5·104·(0.01÷0.1)λ2), where Q is the activity of the irradiated area of the radioactive cloud [Ku], σ - effective scattering area of the irradiated area of the radioactive cloud [m2], λ - wavelength of the electromagnetic cloud [m].

EFFECT: possibility of a remote assessment of the level of activity of a radioactive cloud in the atmosphere without preliminary measurement of the parameters of the air environment at the source of the radioactive release.
