FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a method and installation for producing carburized direct reduction sponge iron from iron oxide material (2). A direct reduction is carried out using a reducing gas with at least 80 vol.% of hydrogen, after which the carbon content of the sponge iron is increased by means of the applied carburizing gas, after which the carburizing gas consumed during this process is at least partially removed with all possible care to avoid mixing with the reducing gas. Moreover, at least one member of the group consisting of both members of the carburizing gas and the prepared spent carburizing gas is heated before or after combining with fresh components of the carburizing gas before it comes into contact with sponge iron, and/or the carburizing gas containing components reacting exothermically with the direct reduced sponge iron and/or heating the sponge iron before and/or during the introduction of the carburizing gas.

EFFECT: efficient carburization is provided while saving natural resources and eliminating the cost of separating undesirable components from the recirculating top gas.
