FIELD: optical communication system.

SUBSTANCE: wireless data transmission using optical communication in free space. Atmospheric optical communication apparatus includes a USPL laser source and a modulator for generating a modulated optical output signal, each of which has a duration of 1 ns or less, a peak optical pulse power of 1 kW or more, and a bandwidth with a capacity of at least 1 Gbps; the first optical transceiver receiving and converting the modulated optical output signal into a wireless optical (FSO) radiation beam transmitted through an absorbing medium to an optical transport platform located at a remote distance from the first optical transceiver and containing a second optical transceiver receiving the FSO radiation beam and directing to photodetector; wherein the absorbing medium contains at least one of aqueous aerosols, turbulent air, and clean air scintillations that create optically complex atmospheric conditions for the FSO radiation beam.

EFFECT: increased reliability and improved operating range of the optical communication system.
