SUBSTANCE: invention relates to improved monitoring of the downlink control channel. To achieve that a user equipment (UE) is provided, comprising a processing circuit that controls a function that includes monitoring a downlink control channel of an unlicensed radio cell to detect information destined for the UE. An unlicensed radio cell operates on an unlicensed frequency grid and is controlled by a base station. The processing circuit and the receiver monitor the downlink control channel based on a first timer and a second timer operating in parallel. The first timer is used to limit the maximum downlink control channel monitoring time by starting the first timer at the start of monitoring and stopping monitoring after the first timer expires. The second timer is used to stop monitoring earlier than the first timer, depending on the state of occupancy of the unlicensed band by the base station.

EFFECT: improved monitoring of the downlink control channel.
