FIELD: non-destructive testing.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to determine the residual mechanical stresses in the welded joints of pipelines and reduce these residual stresses. In the method for increasing the life of pipelines, the acoustic echo method is used to measure the propagation times of longitudinal and transverse waves polarized along and across the axis of the pipe. Based on the data obtained, residual stresses are determined. Measurements are carried out at the points of installation of supports, connection of the pipeline to the equipment or to another pipeline. For stress measurement points, the maximum permissible values of residual stresses are determined according to the given mathematical expression. The obtained values of residual stresses (σb)m are compared with the calculated maximum allowable residual stresses for this point [(σb)m]. If at this point the measured voltage (σb)m exceeds the maximum allowable stress [(σb)m], measures are taken to reduce the measured voltages to an acceptable level, that is, to the level (σb)m≤ [(σb)m].

EFFECT: increase of resource of the pipelines based on creation of a technology for determining the permissible values of residual stresses, determining locations and a method for measuring residual stresses.
