SUBSTANCE: devices for decoding audio signals. An apparatus for outputting a stereo audio signal having a left channel and a right channel, the apparatus comprising: a demultiplexer capable of receiving an audio bitstream and extracting a prediction coefficient therefrom; a decoder configured to generate a downmix signal and a residual signal from the encoded audio bitstream; and an upmixer configured to operate in either a predictive mode or a non-predictive mode based on a parameter encoded in the audio bitstream and output a left channel and a right channel as a stereo audio signal, wherein when the upmixer operates in predictive mode, the residual signal represents the difference between the side signal and the predicted version of the side signal, and the upmixer generates a left channel and a right channel from the combination of the downmix signal, the residual signal, and the prediction coefficients for each of the plurality of frequency bands, and when the upmixer operates in non-prediction mode, the residual signal is a side signal, the upmixer generates a left channel based on the sum of the downmix signal and the residual signal passed through the decoder, and the upmixer generates a right channel based on the difference between the downmix signal and the residual signal passed through the decoder.

EFFECT: increased computational efficiency, achievement of a range of high data bit rates.
