SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding and decoding means. The method includes combining two audio channels to obtain a first combined signal as a mid-signal and a residual signal which can be derived using a predicted side signal derived from the mid-signal. The first combined signal and prediction residual signal are encoded and written into a data stream together with prediction information derived by an optimiser based on an optimisation target. The decoder uses the prediction residual signal, the first combined signal and the prediction information to obtain a decoded first channel signal and a decoded second channel signal. In an encoder example or in a decoder example, real-to-imaginary transform can be applied for estimating the imaginary part of the spectrum of the first combination signal. For calculating the prediction signal, the real-valued first combined signal is multiplied by a real portion of the complex prediction information and the estimated imaginary part of the first combined signal is multiplied by an imaginary portion of the complex prediction information.

EFFECT: high audio signal quality.
