FIELD: chemical technology.
SUBSTANCE: method of operating a quench column includes feeding a reactor effluent into the quench column and contacting the reactor effluent with polymer-containing water in an effluent extraction zone to obtain an extracted effluent; contacting the extracted effluent stream with sulphuric acid in the acid contact zone; diverting the first stream to obtain the first stream of the quench column containing about 10 wt.% or less of the polymer with the amount of ammonium sulphate and the amount of polymer determined by the formula y=-M1x+C1, where y is a wt.% of ammonium sulphate, x is a wt.% of polymer, M1 is 4.6 or less, and C1 is 45 or less; and diverting the second stream to produce the second quench column stream containing more than about 10 wt.% of polymer and less than about 5 wt.% of ammonium sulphate.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of the process.
