Method for controlling the pH of the hardening column involves adding acid to the quenching column for controlling pH in the effluent from one or more hardening columns. In one aspect, the method comprises measuring the pH of the condensate of the quenching column and controlling the amount of acid, added to hardening column to maintain pH at approximately 3.5 to approximately 7 in condensate. Condensate pH measurement provides a constant and accurate procedure for controlling acid addition to the quenching column.
