FIELD: heat generation.

SUBSTANCE: heat generation method for starting the heat generation reaction of the heat generating element includes a heat generation step of heating the heat generation element with the heater and inducing the first heat generation reaction in which the heat generation element generates heat in the first heat generation amount. The heat generating element includes a base made of a hydrogen storage metal, a hydrogen storage alloy or a proton conductor, and a multilayer film on the surface of the base with a layered configuration, including the first layer made of a hydrogen storage metal or a hydrogen storage alloy and having a thickness of less than 1000 nm, and a second layer made of a hydrogen storage metal or a hydrogen storage alloy different from the metal or alloy of the first layer or ceramic and having a thickness of less than 1000 nm. The method includes the step of perturbing the input power supplied to the heater in a state where the first heat release reaction occurs to start the second heat release reaction in which the heat generating element generates heat with a second heat release amount greater than the first heat release amount.
