FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: used in electric steelmaking for steelmaking in an electric arc steelmaking furnace. The method includes filling the working space of the furnace with scrap metal, solid carbonaceous materials, and lime. Return slag is used in the amount of 5÷35% of the volume of lime for melting, fusing and finishing the semi-finished melt at the ladle furnace unit. The return slag is drawn off the steel ladle at the ladle furnace unit and modified before drawing off by adding a modifier in the amount of 0.2÷1.8 kg per ton of steel with a content of boron oxides of at least 5 wt.%.

EFFECT: reducing power consumption by 4.0-4.6% when obtaining a semi-finished product, as well as reducing by 1.5-1.95 times the volume of return slag removal to the landfill for disposal by replacing part of the lime with slag.
