FIELD: metal cutting.
SUBSTANCE: indexable cutting insert contains a central mounting section and two cutting sections. The central mounting section includes opposing upper and lower surfaces. The bottom surface is comprised of two associated joint elements, with each joint element comprising two diverging butt surfaces defining two butt corners. Said two cutting sections extend away from the central mounting section, contain distal cutting edges and are located in diagonally opposite quadrants of four quadrants formed by two mutually perpendicular planes of the quadrants. The two bisector joint planes that bisect the two joint angles and the first plane of the quadrant are parallel or coincident. In the top view, two cutting portions extend away from the central mounting portion in opposite directions. Two cutting bisector lines parallel to said two directions and bisecting said two cutting edges are offset relative to each other. The cutting tool contains a plate holder and a cutting plate removably fixed in it.
EFFECT: ensures that cutting operations are performed under conditions of limited access to a rotating workpiece.
