SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in the metallurgical and mechanical engineering industries in the production of critical parts, including aerospace equipment. A method for determining the susceptibility of iron, copper, nickel, cobalt, titanium and their alloys to hydrogen embrittlement with the actual content of atomic hydrogen in them includes heating a sample of the specified metals and alloys in a furnace with an open atmosphere to the oxidation temperature, holding at this temperature until the formation of samples of a stable oxide layer and cooling the sample to ambient temperature, reheating in a vacuum oven to a temperature above 570°C, holding at this temperature for at least 30 minutes and cooling to ambient temperature, while the colour of the oxide remains unchanged on the entire surface of the sample after heating and holding in a vacuum oven, the metal and alloy are considered not susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, and when the colour of the oxide changes over the entire surface of the sample, the metal and alloy are considered to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.
EFFECT: possibility of determining the susceptibility of metals and alloys to hydrogen embrittlement by changing the colour of the oxide on the surface of the sample - metal (alloy), using sample hydrogen as a reducing agent for the metal oxide.
