SUBSTANCE: method for producing a multilayer coating for a cutting tool. A multilayer ion plasma coating is applied. The bottom layer is applied from a nitride compound of niobium and zirconium and the top layer is made from niobium nitride. The application of coating layers is carried out by three cathodes located horizontally in one plane, the first and second of which are made of niobium and are located opposite to each other, and the third is made of zirconium and is located between them. The bottom layer is applied using three cathodes, and the top layer is applied using the first and second cathodes.
EFFECT: improving the performance of the cutting tool.
