FIELD: metalworking.
SUBSTANCE: method for applying a wear-resistant coating to a cutting tool used in metalworking. Vacuum-plasma application of a multilayer coating is carried out. First, a bottom layer of nitride, a compound of niobium and iron, is applied. A top layer of niobium nitride is then applied. The application of coating layers is carried out by three cathodes located horizontally in one plane. The first and second cathodes are made of niobium and are located opposite to each other. The third cathode is made of a composite of niobium and iron and is placed between them. The bottom layer is applied using the three mentioned cathodes, and the top layer is applied using the first and second cathodes.
EFFECT: improving the performance of the cutting tool.
