SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to determine the physical properties of rocks used as a secondary mineral resource in the mining industry, as well as to determine the indicators of the technological properties of clay-based raw materials used for production of ceramic products, expanded clay, refractories, geopolymers, glass composites. The method for determining plasticity of clay-based raw materials consists in preparing the clay mass and determining the moisture values corresponding to the yield strength and the rolling-out limit, in which water is sequentially added to the clay mass and, using an infrared spectrometer, the infrared spectra of the moistened clay mass are recorded in the middle range of wave numbers in the disturbed mode total internal reflection, in which absorption bands with a maximum in the range of wave numbers 900-1100 cm-1 are identified, which corresponds to vibrations of the SiO groups of the crystal lattice of clay minerals, and a graphical dependence of the position of the maximum of the absorption band of Si–O bond vibrations on water content and according to the minimum on the constructed curve determines the moisture value at the rolling-out limit, the first break of the curve determines the moisture value at the yield boundary, and the section of the curve from the minimum to the first break determines the plasticity number.

EFFECT: reduced labour intensity, reduced measurement time, improved accuracy and reliability of determining the yield strength and rolling-out limit, as well as the plasticity index of clay-based raw materials.
