The device contains a reader and is configured to read at least one type of transponder information and/or data stored on the transponder using the reader in a contactless manner, as well as to evaluate and/or transmit the information. A handrail for a passenger movement system, such as an escalator or travelator, consists of several layers and contains a transponder. At least one built-in transponder containing at least one type of information is located on the surface or inside the handrail. The transponder is designed in such a way that at least one type of information can be transmitted from the transponder to the reading device in a contactless manner. One of the layers is a fabric structure. The transponder is integrated into a tissue structure or, in particular, supported by a tissue structure.
