SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an apparatus for washing the escalator handrails. Apparatus for washing the escalator handrails comprises a body for coupling with the escalator handrail and a washing unit; power generation and control units; sensors; a charging element and mobile element. The power generation unit is located in the body. The washing unit comprises multiple rollers. The first roller rotates without electricity in a first direction opposite to the set direction of rotation of the handrail. The other rollers rotate impacted by the force of rotation of the first roller and clean while the handrails are moving. The first sensor is located on the first roller and determines the direction of rotation thereof. Depending on the direction of rotation of the first roller recorded by the first sensor, the control unit determines that the escalator operates normally or has malfunctioned. The power generation unit comprises a power generation element intended for converting the kinetic energy of the handrail into electricity. The mobile element is capable of repositioning the power generation element so as to bring said element in contact with the handrail surface. The power generation element rotates around the axis by means of the mobile part.

EFFECT: possibility of using the apparatus without electricity and prevention of emergency situations.
