FIELD: metalworking.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for producing brass billets. A method for producing a brass billet with a lead content reduced to less than 1.5 wt.% includes the following steps: mechanical processing is carried out by removing chips from a finished product or semi-finished product consisting of brass containing 1.5-3.5 wt.% of lead, to obtain brass shavings, compressing the brass shavings to increase its outer surface, crushing the specified brass shavings to obtain brass particles, removing lead from the specified brass particles to obtain brass particles with a reduced lead content by washing the specified brass particles in a water solution and one or more organic acids selected from butanoic acid, propionic acid, 2-propenoic acid and acrylic acid, wherein the lead removal bath is mixed by ultrasound, a charge containing said brass particles with a reduced lead content is melted in an oven, and billets are obtained by means of direct or reverse extrusion of a casting from a molten product.

EFFECT: possibility of using ordinary brass shavings, i.e. with normal lead content, to obtain brass blanks with reduced lead content.
