SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of treating radiation exposure. A method of treating radiation exposure in an individual who has been or will be exposed to radiation, comprising administering to the individual a pharmaceutical composition containing from 1 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg of an amount of a compound of formula I, a compound of formula II, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or a combination thereof:

where R is either -P(O)(OH)₂ or -P(O) (OR₁) (OR₂); R₁ represents either H or -C_1-26 alkyl; and R₂ represents -C_1-26 alkyl; R₃ represents H, -C(O)-ZN(R₄)(R₅), -C(O)ZC(O)-OH or -C(O)-NH-Y-CH₂-OC(O )-ZC(O)-OH; Z represents C_1-6 alk; Y represents arylene; R₄ represents either H or C_1-6 alkyl; R₅ represents either H or C_1-6 alkyl; or R₄ and R₅ together with the nitrogen to which they are attached form heterocycloalkyl; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

EFFECT: above method is effective for treating radiation exposure in an individual who has been or will be exposed to radiation.
