SUBSTANCE: group of inventions is related to an aerosol-generating device, a cartridge for an aerosol-generating system, and an aerosol-generating system. The aerosol-generating device includes a liquid storage portion for holding a liquid aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating device includes a surface acoustic wave atomizer for atomizing a liquid aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol. The surface acoustic wave atomizer contains a spraying section and at least one transducer configured to generate surface acoustic waves for propagation along the surface of the surface acoustic wave atomizer, including the spraying section. The spray area contains a hydrophilic region. The aerosol-generating device further comprises a supply member configured to supply a liquid aerosol-forming substrate from the liquid storage portion to the spray portion. The aerosol-generating device also includes a control system configured to control the operation of the atomizer on the surface acoustic waves.
