SUBSTANCE: following is provided: a method of treating age-related inflammation in a patient in need thereof comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of a reverse transcriptase inhibitor (RTI) to the patient, wherein the said RTI is censavudine or elvucitabine, and the said age-related inflammation is associated with increased expression of long dispersed element-1 (L1), accumulation of cytoplasmic long dispersed element-1 (L1) cDNA, activation of the type I interferon (IFN-I) response, or enhancement of the proinflammatory state of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) cells. Wherein the said age-related inflammation is present in a patient having a disease or disorder selected from the group consisting of the following: Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, vision loss, hearing loss, cardiovascular dysfunction, frontotemporal dementia (FTD), multiple sclerosis (MS), Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis and pulmonary fibrosis.
